A municipality in Mallorca is home to one of the most iconic lighthouses in the Balearics. The Formentor lighthouse, inaugurated in 1863 and with almost 168 years of history, stands majestically 210 metres above sea level near Pollensa, offering not only an important maritime signalling service but also unparalleled views of the Mediterranean. Construction of this historic lighthouse began in 1857, but the logistical challenges in this rugged and isolated area of the island meant that the first two and a half years were spent exclusively on opening a special road to transport the necessary materials.

This monumental task required the efforts of more than 200 workers, who worked even on Sundays and public holidays, prompting the Bishop of Mallorca to order the construction of an altar on site so that they could attend mass before starting their working day. After overcoming numerous difficulties, the lighthouse with its 22 metre tower and several houses for the lighthouse keepers were finally built, all at a considerable height, giving it the highest focal plane in Mallorca.

Today, this historic lighthouse operates by means of a remote-controlled solar signal, while the former lighthouse keepers’ houses have been converted into restaurant facilities for visitors. The Formentor lighthouse is located in the municipality of Pollensa, a town known for its mild climate throughout the year and its impressive tourist attractions. This Mallorcan enclave offers visitors beaches and coves with crystal-clear waters, numerous mountain trails for walking or cycling, and a rich cultural offering that makes it a highly valued destination for national and international tourists.

The Formentor peninsula, where the lighthouse is located, is one of the most photographed and described landscapes in Mallorca, along with Cavall Bernat in Cala de Sant Vicenç, also within the municipality of Pollensa. This area has historically served as a source of inspiration for numerous artists, captivated by its extraordinary natural beauty and imposing landscapes. To reach the lighthouse, visitors must follow a winding road that offers spectacular views of several coves (Cala Figuera, Cala Murta and Cala en Gossalba), as well as the Colomer viewpoint, from where you can see the islet of the same name.

Along the way, you will also find the Albercuix watchtower and the famous Hotel Formentor, located next to a beach with crystal-clear waters that completes this idyllic setting. In addition to the iconic lighthouse, Pollensa has an authentic historic centre that preserves much of its original charm. Visitors can enjoy its authentic festivals and traditions, which keep the island’s cultural heritage alive.

The local cuisine is another major attraction, with numerous establishments where you can discover traditional Mallorcan flavours. The privileged terrain of the area has made Pollensa an ideal destination for lovers of sports tourism. The mountains, trails and coastline offer the perfect setting for activities such as hiking, cycling, diving and water sports, providing an alternative to classic sun and beach tourism.

The combination of historical heritage, natural beauty, gastronomic offerings and opportunities for active tourism make Pollensa a complete destination that attracts visitors of all kinds, consolidating its position as one of the most attractive municipalities in the north of Mallorca for those seeking an authentic and varied tourist experience at any time of year.
