The plans announced for Magalluf are a real breath of fresh air and clearly underline that major hotel chains have full faith in this island and its future. The investment which is being undertaken by the Melia Group is enormous and will clearly alter the look of Magalluf and its surrounding areas. Magalluf is like the old-lady of the Majorcan tourist industry. It needs a makeover and let us hope that it will also mean the return of so-called family tourism to the resort after so long. Tourism in Majorca needs to move in a different direction. We need new hotels and new resorts to compete with newer destinations in the eastern Mediterranean. A new Magalluf will put the resort firmly back on pole position. A nice new resort could lead to more winter flights and more winter tourism. We could finally have an all-year- round tourist industry. So much has been said about tourism in Majorca over the last decade, but in most cases it has just been talk. Now a major international company has decided to add its financial clout and its long experience within the industry to relaunch Magalluf. We should all feel far more optimistic and we can look to the future with new ideas Hopefully Magalluf will just be the start. Perhaps the Playa de Palma will be next? In these hard times any investment is welcome, but on this scale we should be shouting from the roof tops. A new look resort and new look hotels plus Sunday opening, what more do you want?
