The Spanish government has proposed a new universal child benefit of 200 euros per month for every child under 18 to combat child poverty and to support families regardless of income.

Announced in February 2026, this plan aims to cover all families legally residing in Spain, but it is currently in the legislative process, not yet finalised or active.

The move has been welcomed by Spanish families who are hoping that it will be approved soon by the Spanish parliament.

Key Details of the Proposal:
Target: All families with children under 18 (including single-parent, adoptive, and foster families).
Amount: €200 per month, per child (totalling €2,400 annually).
Eligibility: Universal, meaning no income limits, though implementation details like potential phase-ins based on age or income are still being developed.
Current Status: It is part of the Sustainable Development Strategy for 2030 but requires approval in the national budget and parliament before taking effect.

It is important to note that this is a newly announced initiative (as of early 2026) and not the same as previous, restricted €200 aid packages from 2022-2023 for low-income households.

Critics, however, question whether the €19 billion annual cost is sustainable without tax increases or spending cuts elsewhere. The proposal still requires formal approval and secured funding. Until then, families will need to wait for further announcements.

If passed, the €200 monthly child payment could represent one of the most significant anti-poverty measures in modern Spanish history.
