The Sa Feixina Christmas market in Palma has been postponed by one week due to administrative and logistical challenges. Originally scheduled to open this Friday, 21 November, as previously reported, the market was meant to coincide with Palma's Christmas lights switch-on ceremony. However, organisers have been forced to delay the public opening until 28 November, weather permitting, with the market now set to run until 6 January. The recent spell of poor weather has created additional obstacles for the setup process.
Sources from the organising committee have indicated that the postponement is due to "administrative and logistical issues, as well as the bad weather". Currently, wooden stalls have already been installed at Sa Feixina park, where vendors will set up shop. Organisers emphasise that the market will "prioritise local products". The event has secured backing from business associations Pimeco and Afedeco, forming part of their 'Palma, tot un centre de diversió' programme, which coordinates numerous events throughout Palma to support small businesses.
The inclement weather has further complicated the Christmas fair setup operations. As of Monday, the structures for the stage and sledge slide were already in place. Plans also include an ice skating rink alongside approximately 60 stalls that will host various artisans from around the island.
Recent changes to the event schedule
Following complaints from the Santa Catalina and Es Jonquet neighbourhood association, several modifications have been agreed with Palma City Council. The market will now operate without ambient music, and none of the attractions will be accompanied by music. Sound will only be permitted on Fridays and Saturdays between 7.30 pm and 9.30 pm.
Last week, association representatives met with two council officials to express residents' concerns about the event. Locals feared constant Christmas carol noise, as well as potential overcrowding and parking problems in the area.
