This Monday, officials unveiled the plans for this year’s Christmas lights switch-on, which is set to take place on Saturday from 7 pm. For safety reasons, the event will be relocated to Plaza España, following last year’s overcrowding at El Borne, which saw over 20,000 attendees.
The Christmas lights switch-on has been moved to Saturday and scheduled earlier in the evening to make it easier for families with young children to attend.
Trui, the company awarded the contract for the event, will stage a 35-minute “dance of stars” before the official illumination. The performance will feature characters Lía and Beba performing around a magical diamond on a specially constructed platform, accompanied by music and visual effects. Additional highlights will include LED lights, snow effects, and projected images with a soundtrack.
A ceremonial countdown will mark the official start of the Christmas season in Palma, with a local social organisation taking part in the switch-on.
Ahead of the main event, the Nativity scene will be opened in the hall of the Cort building from Friday, with a letterbox for children to post letters to the Three Kings. This year’s festive lighting budget has risen to €1.9 million, an increase of €12,000 compared to last year.
