Oh it’s getting so complicated to travel to Europe at the moment and the peak season is just around the corner, not to mention the impact of the war in the Middle East. And now, UK holiday makers are being urged to check their passports immediately, as outdated documents could disrupt travel plans during the peak summer season.

Travel experts and the British government have issued a warning that many British travellers still using pre-Brexit red passports may unknowingly fall foul of strict validity rules enforced by multiple countries. While red passports remain valid for travel until their expiration date, you must adhere to two critical post-Brexit rules when visiting the EU (excluding Ireland) and the Schengen Area:1.

The “10-Year Rule” The Rule: Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years ago on the day you enter the destination country. The Warning: Before October 2018, the UK often added “extra months” (up to 9 months) from an old passport onto a new one. For example, a passport issued on June 6, 2016, might list an expiry date of March 6, 2027. While it looks valid for 11 years, it cannot be used to enter the EU after June 6, 2026, because it will be more than 10 years old.

2. The “3-Month Validity Rule” The Rule: Your passport must be valid for at least three months after the date you plan to leave the EU or Schengen country. The Warning: If you plan to return from a holiday on August 1st, but your passport expires on September 1st, you may be denied entry because you do not have the required three-month “buffer”.

What You Should Do
Check the “Issue Date”: Do not just look at the expiry date; ensure the issue date was less than 10 years ago for EU travel. Airlines Are Strict: Major carriers like Jet2, Ryanair, and easyJet have issued alerts that they will refuse boarding to passengers who do not meet these specific criteria.Renew Early: If your red passport fails either test, renew it online through HM Passport Office well in advance of your trip.

With millions of Britons expected to travel abroad this summer, failing to meet passport requirements could result in missed flights, denied boarding or entry refusals at borders. Authorities are urging passengers not to assume their passport is valid simply because it has not yet expired.
