After yesterday’s cold snap covered some of the mountains peaks of Mallorca white with hail, on Tuesday, 10 March, skies will remain mostly cloudy with more rain forecast and alert may be activated.
Temperatures are forecast to stay between 15ºC and 18ºC, similar to previous days, with predominantly light winds from the south and southeast increasing to moderate easterly breezes overnight.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, 11 March, intervals of cloudiness with rain showers are predicted. Temperatures will remain stable or rise slightly, generally exceeding the seasonal average of 16ºC in many areas of the island. Winds will be light to moderate from the east and northeast.

March has so far been a wet month, and this past weekend saw significant rainfall across much of the island. The Spanish meteorological agency Aemet reported that between Friday and Saturday, 43 litres of water per square metre fell in the Serra d’Alfàbia, with 22 litres in Banyalbufar, 20 litres at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), and 19 litres in Escorca, Son Torrella. Binissalem recorded 17 litres, while Escorca itself saw 16 litres.

These figures highlight that Escorca, where the reservoirs supplying Palma are located, was among the areas most favoured by the rain. The weekend’s precipitation is a welcome boost for the island’s water resources, particularly following a relatively dry spell earlier this year.

Excluding the latest rainfall, as figures have not yet been updated, the reservoirs remain in good condition. On 3 March, Gorg Blau was at 64.14% of its capacity, while Cúbúer stood at 64.47%, indicating a healthy level of reserves for Palma’s supply.

But it could be much worse, at least one person has been killed in Catalonia after torrential rain battered mainland Spain, with experts warning that more is still to come. Authorities had been searching for a 69-year-old man since Friday, when his vehicle was swept away by floodwater during a violent storm in Catalonia.

The FCDO said: "Flash flooding can cause travel disruption and damage to property and infrastructure. Check weather warnings from Spain’s meteorological office (AEMET) before travel and follow the advice of the local authorities." AEMET forecasts predominantly cloudy or overcast skies and widespread rainfall, particularly in the Cantabrian region, the northern parts of the Canary Islands (along with a chance of light rain), the northeast of Spain, and the Balearics.
