The Palma city council has placed Palma on bad weather red alert as a result of Storm Joseph with many top attractions being closed to the public and a warning to take extreme care when you go out in the city. Three main park, including Bellver Woods, are closed until Thursday.

The park in the Paseo Sagrera, in central Palma, will be closed from tonight. According to a council spokesperson they were taking these measures to "guarantee the safety of the general public."

The council said that winds of up to 40 kilometres an hour could be expected in the city from midday today. Other councils across the islands are taking similar action.

The spokesperson said that waves of up to four metres high could be expected in the following hours. The Palma Met Office has issued a general alert for Storm Joseph.

This latest storm alert comes as the island has shivered through much of January with the Met Office saying that it was one of the coldest starts of the year on record. The only good news is that the island reservoirs are now almost 60 percent full after weeks of heavy rain.
