Palma Town Hall said on Sunday afternoon that the demons' fire-running 'correfoc', scheduled for 7pm, would be going ahead. This was despite the town hall having closed some parts of the city earlier in the day because of high winds.
A met agency yellow alert for wind was in place until midnight; gusts of 80 km/h were forecast. Another yellow alert - this one for coastal conditions - was upgraded to amber.
The closure of parts of the city was from 2pm. This is a standard procedure when high winds are forecast and applies especially to areas where there may be the risk of trees falling.
The Passeig Sagrera on the seafront was one of these areas. Others were parks such as that at Bellver Castle.
