Storm Harry brought dramatic scenes to Mallorca's northeast coast on Wednesday, as the sea surged onto land in the Sa Pedruscada area, near Cala Rajada. Residents awoke to find coastal properties battered by powerful waves, with seawater flooding several homes and causing notable material damage across parts of Capdepera and Costa dels Pins.

Witnesses described anxiously watching as the high seas repeatedly pounded homes situated right on the shoreline. "The water swept several metres inland with force," some residents reported, as the stormy weather evoked memories of previous events linked to Storm Gloria, which had a similar impact on this stretch of the Llevant coastline.

The Aemet kept the area on a yellow alert due to dangerous coastal conditions, with strong winds and waves reaching heights of 3 to 4 metres throughout the day. Local authorities reiterated advice to avoid venturing near the shore because of the persistent heavy surf, which is expected to continue until at least 8 pm.

Beyond Sa Pedruscada, other communities along Mallorca's Llevant, including s'Illot and Canyamel, experienced strong winds and significant wave action overtaking parts of the coastline. While the full extent of property damage is still being assessed, no major injuries or significant personal harm have been reported. Nevertheless, local residents are urged to remain cautious while storm conditions persist.

A reader sent in these striking photos following the storm and road closure in Son Severa caused by Storm Harry. The images, taken Wednesday morning, show a sailboat that was beached during the storm on Tuesday night. The vessel had been parked in the area for several weeks and, sadly, suffered damage as a result of the severe weather. The incident comes in the wake of significant coastal flooding that forced the closure of the main road to Costa dels Pins, as local authorities acted quickly to protect residents and traffic after waves carried stones and sand onto the carriageway. Vehicles became stranded and public transport was disrupted, with buses unable to pass, prompting the Son Servera Council to implement full emergency protocols at the Ca Na Bel restaurant junction.

Cala Figuera fishing fleet severely damaged by storm

Cala Figuera port, located in the municipality of Santanyí, also faced significant disruption as a result of the recent severe weather conditions. Over the course of a powerful storm, the four trawlers which routinely operate in this fishing hub were left badly damaged, with smaller recreational vessels also submerged.

The adverse weather did more than just batter the boats; port infrastructure suffered too. Notably, one of the moorings was completely torn free and blown away by strong winds. According to Catalina Cantallops, secretary of the Cala Figuera Fishermen's Guild, "fortunately, there have been no personal injuries, but the financial losses will be considerable. In addition to repair costs for the trawlers, fishermen won’t be able to go out until their boats are operational again. We're talking about several thousand euros being lost during this downtime." Currently, affected fishermen and boat owners are awaiting insurance adjusters' assessments to determine the full extent of the damages. The storm has not only disrupted the daily routines of the local fishing community but also underlined the unpredictable impact severe weather can have on vulnerable coastal infrastructure.

While the precise financial toll remains to be finalised, the immediate concern is the restoration of both vessels and port facilities. As the weather stabilises, the focus turns to repairs and enabling the vital fishing activity to resume, minimising long-term losses to the community and ensuring the port remains operational for future seasons.
