For the great majority of the cyclists in the Mallorca 312 OK Mobility, it's about the taking part rather than the racing. But there is a race element, and the men's 312 crown was this year claimed by Briton Luke Barfoot, who triumphed in a close final sprint alongside Albrecht Anton and Yannick Ruschmeier, all three finishing with the same time (8:45:29). Germany's Janine Meyer was first in the women's 312, setting a new record of 9:09:45.

The event, which started in Playa de Muro at 6.30 on Saturday morning, featured legends of the cycling world in Jan Ullrich, Alberto Contador and Miguel Indurain. Ullrich opted for the 167 kilometre course, while Contador and Indurain tackled the full course, clocking times of 9:09:58 and 9:48:55 respectively.

Afterwards, Ullrich said: "It's been incredible to share these kilometres with all the fans. The safety throughout the race is amazing, and together with the fantastic weather, it makes this a world-class event."

Contador, who has taken part in previous editions, reckoned "this has been the one I've enjoyed the most thanks to all the work of the organisers who ensure that each of us can have an unforgettable day".

And Indurain added to the compliments for the event: "It's a joy to be able to experience a day like this, with all the fans and with groups that keep you going at a good pace so you can finish feeling so fresh after so many kilometres."
