Palma College Moves to a New Site in Central Palma and Launches Host Boarding Programme: An Interview with Headteacher Dr Joan Aguiló

Palma College, Mallorca’s only independent Sixth Form centre, is preparing for one of the most exciting chapters in its history. In September 2026 the College will move to a new site in central Palma and launch a Host Family Boarding Programme for international students.

Headteacher Dr Joan Aguiló has been at the heart of this journey since day one. A chemist with a PhD in Organic & Inorganic Chemistry, he has worked in education for more than 15 years, 12 of them at Palma College. “The College started with 11 students and six staff members. Now we are the largest Sixth Form in Mallorca with 85 students and 25 staff.”

Dr Aguiló believes the ethos of the college has never changed. “We adapt to the needs of our students and staff, making sure that high-quality personalised education, kindness and respect are always key.” This summer’s results reflect that ethos: several A* grades in Maths, Art, Psychology and Spanish, with every student going to university securing a place at their first or second choice. The College offers a wide range of A Levels and also BTECs in both Sport and Travel and Tourism. Each student takes part in an enrichment programme alongside their academic studies to support their personal growth, wellbeing and readiness for life beyond college.

The new premises will offer larger classrooms, a gym, a drama theatre, a modern common room and eventually a rooftop recreation space, while keeping class sizes at just 12. Alongside this, the new Host Family Boarding Programme will welcome students from abroad whose families cannot relocate. “It’s a natural step in our growth,” says Dr Aguiló. “International learners bring fresh perspectives, and host families gain cultural exchange and lifelong connections.”
