Around ten minutes to five on Monday afternoon, several Palma Police patrols went to an apartment on C. Gabriel Llabrés in the Pere Garau district.
Witnesses had reported hearing a 73-year-old woman, María del Rosario, cry for help from the apartment's balcony. They also heard muffled cries. When the police arrived, they found her body. It was covered with multiple bruises. Of various family members who then went to the scene, a granddaughter cried out - "She has been beaten to death."
Her 36-year-old daughter-in-law, identified as M.A.F.S., was arrested. She, allegedly, had murdered her mother-in-law.
Maria's son had gone to the apartment after being alerted by phone. He was the first to find the body and later went to the National Police headquarters as a witness. The Homicide Squad was by now in charge of the investigation.
Forensics officers arrived around half six. Two hours later the body was removed. Neighbours, shocked by what had happened, watched on in disbelief.
