"Palma is the most expensive city to live in," says opposition councillor

Expensive housing in Palma.

Opposition socialist Party councillor Francesc Dalmau on the Palma council stated during the State of the City Debate that the main problem facing this city “is housing.”

This is something he has reiterated on numerous occasions, noting that “Palma is the most expensive city to live in. We can no longer afford to rent an apartment; now, if we’re lucky, we can hope to rent a room. It is unfair and undignified.”

The councillor noted that he would be “ashamed” to propose a housing plan in which 950 of the units rent for 1,000 euros a month. A price that “no one can afford,” since a young person earning minimum wage cannot meet these costs.

Added to this problem is the inability to save: “real estate developers advise young people to save 300 euros each month,” something that becomes an impossible task and effectively forces residents out of their homes. In response to this Housing Plan, the PSOE has denounced the lack of oversight that will exist when allocating these rentals, as private companies will make the decisions.

“The inaction is absolute: they have left 460 million euros unspent across their three budgets,” they stated. “This investment could have been used to address many real needs,” they emphasized.
