Two of Mallorca's most popular and infamous holiday resorts, the Playa de Palma and Magalluf could be linked as part of plans announced this morning by Palma Mayor Jaime Martinez. He wants to form a new metropolitan area linking Palma (Playa de Palma, Cala Major) with Calvia (Magalluf, Palmanova, Illetas Santa Ponsa), Lluchmajor and Marratxi.

"The Metropolitan Area seeks to strengthen local autonomy, promote regional cooperation, and build a more efficient administration," said the Mayor.

The Playa de Palma is famous for the resorts of Arenal and Can Pastilla, hugely popular with German tourists while Magalluf and Palmanova are the top resorts for British tourists.

The basic idea behind the new Metropolitan area is to reduce red tap and bring together key municipalities on the island under one roof. It could make getting funding from the central administration or even the regional authorities easier.

The Mayor of Palma said that they would be starting talks with the various municipalities over the coming weeks.
