On June 21, the impressive cruise ship MV Britannia will make a highly anticipated call to the port of Palma, bringing thousands of visitors to Mallorca and adding another major highlight to the city’s busy summer cruise season. Operated by P&O Cruises, Britannia is one of the most recognizable ships sailing in European waters and serves as the flagship of the company’s fleet. Since entering service in 2015, the vessel has become well known for its elegant design, modern facilities, and strong connection to British maritime tradition.
Built by Fincantieri at its renowned shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, Britannia officially entered service on March 14, 2015. The ship was formally named by Queen Elizabeth II during a ceremony in Southampton, continuing a long-standing royal connection with P&O Cruises. Measuring more than 330 metres in length, Britannia is instantly recognizable thanks to the enormous Union Flag painted across her bow — believed to be the largest of its kind in the world.
Passengers aboard Britannia enjoy an extensive range of luxury facilities, including 13 bars, 13 restaurants and cafés, multiple swimming pools, a spa, and a 936-seat theatre. The ship has also earned a reputation for its culinary experiences, with contributions from celebrated chefs including James Martin, Marco Pierre White, and Mary Berry. With more than 1,800 cabins — all outside staterooms featuring balconies — Britannia continues to be one of the most popular ships in the P&O Cruises fleet.
Britannia is no stranger to Palma. In August 2023, the ship made international headlines after breaking free from her moorings during a sudden storm in Palma harbour. Strong winds caused the vessel to drift across the port and collide with the moored oil tanker Castillo de Arteaga. While only minor injuries were reported onboard, the incident drew significant attention to the power of the storm that swept across Mallorca that day. Despite the dramatic event, Britannia quickly returned to regular operations and continues to sail popular Mediterranean and Caribbean itineraries.
The arrival of Britannia on June 21 is expected to bring a lively atmosphere to Palma’s waterfront, with visitors exploring the city’s historic centre, restaurants, shops, and beaches throughout the day. Cruise tourism remains an important part of Mallorca’s economy, and the presence of iconic ships such as Britannia continues to reinforce Palma’s position as one of the Mediterranean’s premier cruise destinations.
