Calvia has become the first municipality in the Balearic Islands to join the Spain Film Commission (SFC), marking a major step forward in its ambition to establish itself as a leading destination for film and television productions. The admission of the Calvia Film Office was unanimously approved during a recent extraordinary assembly of the organisation, which now brings together 51 film commissions and offices from across Spain.
The Spain Film Commission coordinates the national network of film offices and works to strengthen Spain’s position as an attractive destination for international productions. It also acts as a bridge between the audiovisual industry and public administrations, helping streamline filming processes while promoting film tourism and economic development linked to the sector.
Calvia’s mayor, Juan Antonio Amengual, described the move as “a turning point” for the municipality, adding that it would generate positive economic benefits while helping position the area as an attractive location for cinema lovers and filmmakers alike. Meanwhile, SFC president Juan Manuel Guimeráns welcomed Calvia as a “strategic ally with enormous potential” capable of strengthening the organisation’s growing audiovisual network.
The municipality has increasingly focused on the film industry as part of a wider strategy to diversify tourism beyond the traditional summer season. Local authorities believe attracting productions can generate significant economic activity through accommodation, hospitality, transport and technical services, while also helping to reduce seasonal dependence on tourism.
The announcement coincides with Calvia’s decision to declare 2026 the “Year of Cinema”, placing the audiovisual sector at the heart of its cultural and tourism agenda. In recent months, the municipality has hosted events including the AI & Film seminar and the AI Movie Awards festival in Magaluf, helping position the area within international discussions surrounding artificial intelligence and filmmaking.
Calvia has also been promoting its cinematic heritage through the “Calvià, Plató de Cine” route, which allows visitors to explore beaches and landscapes used in well-known international productions, television series and music videos. The municipality has attracted brands including Versace, Primark and H&M, while productions such as The Mallorca Files, White Lines and Hollyoaks have all filmed in the area. International music stars, including BTS member V, have also chosen Calvia’s coastline as a backdrop for major video productions, further cementing the municipality’s growing reputation as a Mediterranean filming hub.
