The body of a woman wearing a life jacket has been recovered off the coast of Formentera after local fishermen spotted a corpse floating in the sea, Spanish authorities said.
The discovery was made a few miles from Punta Gavina at around 1.15pm on Tuesday. Officers from the Guardia Civil’s Special Group of Underwater Activities (GEAS) were deployed to the scene and retrieved the body before bringing it ashore.
Police said no details have yet been released about the woman’s identity, nationality or how she died. An investigation is ongoing.
It is the sixth body to be recovered in waters around Ibiza and Formentera in less than two months. Most of those found were wearing life jackets, according to authorities.
The deaths come amid renewed migrant crossings from North Africa towards the Balearic Islands. Previous recoveries were reported in Cala Mestella, Ses Canyes, Sa Figuera Borda, Cala Pou d'en Miquel Pere and Es Pujols between late March and mid-April.
