Energy BYD Challenge arrived in Campos with an environmental focus tailored for young people. The event, backed by Campos town hall, the Conselleria d’Empresa, Ocupació i Energia of the Balearic Government and BYD Quadis Dream, brought together 130 primary school students at the plaza de Can Pere Ignasi to highlight nature conservation, sustainable mobility and energy balance.
The afternoon featured an array of educational workshops and activities aiming to raise awareness of ecological challenges. Pupils from 6th year classes of Fra Joan Ballester, Joan Veny Clar and CEIP de Call Vermell schools participated, arriving in successive groups to explore different stations set up across the open public square.
Among the interactive options was a dedicated area for electric mobility, showcasing a contemporary vehicle alongside an educational video explaining the significance of sustainable transport. Students took an interactive quiz to demonstrate their understanding of the subject.
Another zone focused on renewable energies, where an expert introduced a vehicle designed for maintenance tasks prioritising efficiency. Each child received a small eggplant seedling at the end, symbolising growth and environmental care. Additionally, a video highlighted the role of renewables in transforming human activity and our relationship with the environment.
A creative workshop invited the children to design the poster for the next Energy BYD Challenge year. Physical engagement was encouraged through a relay race recycling game, where teams sorted material cards into appropriate bins, reinforcing proper waste management practices.
As preparation, schools were encouraged to create exhibitions showcasing positive local environmental actions, including tree planting of native species, upgrading to LED streetlights and installing electric vehicle charging points in Campos.
The town hall also conducted a workshop focused on the municipality’s livestock sector, exhibiting a four-month-old calf named María Jesús from the Sa Vinya farm, emphasizing the agricultural heritage of Mallorca and its current significance.
The event saw active participation from numerous local officials: Mayor Xisca Porquer, Carme Marín (Culture, Education and Childhood), Manolo Vara (Public Works and Services), Rafel Adrover (Urban Planning, Activities and Environment), Marta Pérez (Finance, Fairs and Festivities) and Maria Obrador (sa Ràpita, ses Covetes and elderly citizens).
The mayor stated, "Our evaluation of Energy is very positive, as it is every time we host it. It is a very interesting initiative focusing on the environment and young people, who are the ones securing its future. By taking part, they get to do sport, have fun and at the same time become aware of the importance of preserving nature." She also highlighted the livestock workshop, noting the value for students of understanding "the importance of the livestock sector, which shows where we come from and where we are heading."
Councilor Carme Marín added that Energy served as "a great opportunity to introduce our municipality’s environmental projects to students, including lighting modernisation, door-to-door waste collection, new deposit areas and improvements to the potable water network." She stressed the vital role children play in raising awareness about caring for the land among their families and communities.
Energy BYD Challenge was held thanks to the support and collaboration of local government bodies and organisations such as Qwello, TBC, Fundació Saica, Viveros Can Juanito, GRAM and Scoobic, combining education, sustainability and community involvement in Campos.
