Calvia Town Hall has completed the transformation of Magalluf’s seafront with the inauguration of the second phase of the Gabriel Escarrer Juliá seafront promenade, concluding a major redevelopment project designed to modernise one of Mallorca’s best-known tourist destinations.

The latest phase included the refurbishment of 2,286 metres of coastal walkway, alongside improvements to C/ Francisca Pujol Terrasa between Punta Ballena and the seafront. C/ Miguel Altoaguirre and its stairways were also renovated. The works were funded through €3 million from the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS), while the first phase received support from the European Union’s Next Generation EU recovery programme.

Named in honour of the late Gabriel Escarrer Juliá, founder of the Meliá Hotels group, the promenade was officially dedicated two years ago in recognition of his contribution to the development of Magalluf and the wider Calvia area.

Calvia mayor Juan Antonio Amengual described the completion of the project as “an important step forward” for the resort, saying the new seafront promenade would provide a modern, accessible and sustainable public space for residents and visitors alike. He added that the redevelopment would help extend tourism beyond the peak summer season while supporting local businesses and restaurants.

The President of the Balearic Islands Government, Marga Prohens, said Magalluf had become an example of tourism regeneration and modernisation. She praised cooperation between the public and private sectors, describing the resort’s transformation as a model for sustainable tourism focused on quality rather than visitor numbers.

Gabriel Escarrer, Chairman and Chief Executive of Meliá Hotels International, paid tribute to his father during the ceremony and said Magalluf was now recognised as a benchmark for higher-quality tourism. He said continued collaboration between businesses and public institutions would help extend the tourist season and boost prosperity in the area.

To mark the completion of the redevelopment, a major beachfront celebration will take place on 27 June featuring a free open-air concert by the Illes Balears Symphony Orchestra under the theme “Magaluf is cinema”. The programme will include music from films such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park and Titanic, accompanied by a 300-drone light show over the bay.

The celebrations form part of Calvià’s wider cultural strategy, which will designate 2026 as the municipality’s “Year of Cinema” in a bid to promote the area as a cultural and audiovisual destination. The same weekend will also host the second edition of the Gastrofira de Magaluf, showcasing local gastronomy in the newly renovated surroundings.
