Two large sharks have been found dead off the coast of Mallorca. The animals were discovered in the waters near Cala Nova on Tuesday, prompting a response from Spain’s Guardia Civil, which secured the area and coordinated the initial operation.
Specialists from Palma Aquarium were also called to the scene to examine the sharks before the carcasses were removed for further analysis.
Officials said the animals are expected to undergo detailed examinations to determine the cause of death.
The species of the sharks has not yet been confirmed, although authorities said both specimens were of considerable size. An investigation is now under way into how the sharks ended up dead in Balearic waters.
