A British billionaire is one of the main shareholders in the Spanish Airport Authority (AENA) which owns Palma airport. Sir Chris Hohn’s hedge fund, The Children's Investment Fund (TCI), holds a massive, multimillion-share investment through financial derivatives in Aena.
TCI holds a multi-billion euro investment in Aena, making it one of the largest shareholders in the company alongside the Spanish government (which controls 51% via ENAIRE).
Sir Chris saw his fortune rise by 411 million pounds to 8.5 billion according to the Sunday Times Rich List published last weekend.
Aena is the world's largest airport operator by passenger volume and number of airports managed. The company handles over 300 million passengers annually across a sprawling global network, and is valued at 32 billion euros.
In 2003, Hohn established The Children's Investment Fund Management (TCI), a value-based hedge fund. Profits generated by the fund were initially proportionately allocated to The Children's Investment Fund Foundation, a registered charity in England and Wales. He is known as an activist investor, and is an outspoken advocate of urgent action on climate change.
