Growing number of people living in motorhomes near Palma airport

The residential use of motorhomes responds to the ongoing housing emergency in Palma and the wider Balearics

| Palma |

Motorhomes have become a common sight throughout various locations in Palma, notably in peripheral areas and occasionally near central neighbourhoods. Though occasionally dispersed, these vehicles attract scrutiny from Palma town hall, especially as they become an embedded part of the urban scene in recognised spots like the municipal pool parking at Son Hugo, Son Güells, Ciudad Jardín, and parts of Playa de Palma.

More recently, significant attention has turned to the Son Oms industrial estate, situated close to Palma airport and the Playa de Palma. Here, numerous motorhomes are parked long-term, with local workers suspecting some residents use them as permanent dwellings. This trend parallels patterns at other industrial zones such as near Son Malferit, where proximity to workplaces encourages similar arrangements.

Adding to this mix, the presence of businesses specialising in motorhome rentals and sales in Son Oms contributes to the large number of parked vehicles, many of which bear foreign registration plates. As a result, the area showcases two clear uses of these vehicles: recreational or holiday purposes and residential use.

The residential use of motorhomes responds to the ongoing housing emergency in Palma and the wider Balearics. Many individuals, unable to secure traditional rentals or accommodation, resort to living in such vehicles.

This phenomenon reflects broader socio-economic challenges affecting the region, where industrial estates like Son Oms double as both hubs for commercial motorhome activity and informal housing solutions. The coexistence of rental fleets alongside permanent dwellings in motorhomes underscores this complex dynamic.
