Supermarket giant Mercadona, has starterd construction on its first warehouse dedicated exclusively to online orders in Palma, which will join the ones already in operation in Valencia, Barcelona, Madrid, Alicante, and Seville.
This “Colmena or Beehive” (as the company internally refers to its online-only warehouses) will be located in Palma and involves an investment of 19.5 million euros. More than 25 suppliers will participate in the construction, providing employment for 150 people during the construction phase. The warehouse, a 14,346-square-metre facility, will be built on a 13,271-square-metre plot.
The team working at the Palma warehouse will consist of more than 200 people, including delivery drivers and online order pickers. Currently, the company already offers online shopping in Mallorca through its network of stores, where products are prepared for delivery in Palma, Calvià, Santanyí, Inca, Llucmajor, Son Servera, and Santa Margalida, among other areas. The future warehouse, scheduled to open in 2027, will strengthen and optimise this service.
The new online shopping platform aims to enhance the experience of customers by launching a new shopping website and mobile app, alongside significant organisational and process changes designed to optimise the way orders are prepared and delivered. All of this boosts productivity and efficiency, ensuring a better service for customers.
For order delivery, Mercadona uses ECO-labelled vans with diesel engines converted to LPG, capable of carrying up to 15 orders. These vehicles have been exclusively designed with three temperature zones adapted to each type of product: ambient, chilled and frozen. They also feature a mechanised unloading system that minimises the handling of the load, thereby reducing strain on workers and cutting down on unloading time.
