Smokers across Spain are facing another update to tobacco prices after the latest changes were published in the Official State Bulletin (BOE) on Friday. The revised list affects 43 tobacco products, including cigars, cigarettes, rolling tobacco and pipe tobacco, with some brands now costing significantly more than they did just a few years ago.

The latest prices, published by the Tobacco Market Commissioner on 8 May, include products from brands such as Davidoff, Clubmaster, Panter and La Aurora. Packs of cigarettes from Signature and Clubmaster are now priced at between €5 and €6, while premium cigars such as the Davidoff Escurio Robusto retail at €16.20 each. Rolling tobacco has also been affected, with Bravo Fine Cut (250g) now priced at €45.90.

Although many consumers associate BOE announcements with price rises, tobacco companies insist this is not always the case. Altadis said tobacco prices in Spain are freely set by manufacturers and importers, with all changes — including reductions and new product launches — required to be officially published before taking effect.

Tobacco remains one of the most heavily taxed products sold in Spain, with taxes and VAT accounting for around 80% of the final retail price. Health authorities and international organisations, including the World Health Organization, continue to support high taxation as one of the most effective ways to reduce smoking rates, particularly among younger people.

The cost of smoking in Spain has risen sharply over recent decades. A standard packet of cigarettes cost around €0.65 in 1990 before climbing to roughly €2.50 in the early 2000s. By 2015, average prices had reached €4.45, while many cigarette brands in 2026 now sell for between €5 and €7 a packet.
