Up to twelve neighbourhoods in Palma are preparing for the arrival of the new Palma-Llucmajor train line, which will connect both municipalities in just 30 minutes, with a journey to Palma Airport taking only 12 minutes. The project, officially approved by the Balearic Government, is scheduled to begin construction in 2028 and will include underground sections beneath densely populated urban areas.
Starting at the Conservatori, located in the s'Olivera district, the line will have a stop on C/ Pompeu Fabra near La Femu Park. This area is experiencing significant real estate growth and will host the forthcoming District of the Arts, comprising the Higher School of Dramatic Arts, the Superior Conservatory of Music and the new Higher School of Design. The next station at Son Costa will utilise the existing metro stop, serving the Son Oliva and Son Fortesa neighbourhoods.
The route will continue with a key station at Plaça Miquel Dolç, impacting mobility in Pere Garau, La Soledat, Son Canals, and particularly Son Gotleu. Starting from Conservatori, the line moves away from Palma's most densely populated zones towards less urbanised areas.
Expansion towards outlying neighbourhoods
The fourth stop will be at Son Güells on Gastón Vuilie Street, numbers 2 to 6. Son Güells is a growing neighbourhood with significant land earmarked for development. Plans foresee 3,097 new homes, exceeding previous urban guidelines by 822 units, of which 1,422 will be market-rate and 1,675 offered at regulated prices. A portion of these must be ceded to the Ajuntament in line with housing policies.
The fifth station will serve the northern side of Son Llàtzer hospital, near the SAMU 061 offices, providing access for thousands of patients and staff. The nearby Son Ferriol area is preparing new infrastructure, including IES Son Ferriol and a new fairground.
Key stops approaching the airport
Next is Coll d’en Rebassa, located at the junction of Darwin and Salomó streets, close to the Fan shopping centre and Mercapalma, though these lie across the motorway.
One of the most notable stations will be situated at the Palma Airport arrivals terminal, enhancing connectivity for travellers. Immediately following is Son Oms station, positioned at the roundabout between Can Calafat and Can Sirgala streets.
The penultimate stop within Palma lies at the corner of Camí d’en Palmer and Camí Meravelles, serving the Playa de Palma area and neighbouring s’Arenal and Las Meravelles. The final station inside Palma is placed between Bellavista A and Bellavista D streets before the line continues towards Llucmajor.
Projected impact on Palma’s mobility
The train passes through densely populated districts and key hubs such as Son Llàtzer hospital and Palma Airport. The Government estimates an annual ridership of 8.5 million users, a 73 per cent increase compared to current rail network figures. The line will provide a fast connection from Palma to the airport in 12 minutes, and to Son Llàtzer in just six. Local residents are looking forward to the service's expected launch in 2032.
