Direct flights from Norwich to Palma airport start this month but the good people of Norfolk are already getting a slice of the island as new potatoes from Sa Pobla are readily available. Our photo was taken of Mallorcan new potatoes on sale in the market town of North Walsham close to Norwich airport.
Mallorcan new potatoes, specifically early varieties like Lady Christl from Sa Pobla, are exported to Britain annually between March and June to fill the pre-season gap in the UK market.
The UK imports approximately 5,000 tons of these potatoes annually, although post-Brexit phytosanitary rules and new soil regulations have caused concern for exporters in 2024 and 2025.
Despite challenges, the quality of the potatoes is generally reported as very good, with 2025 seeing continued exports.
The trade remains vital to the local economy in Mallorca, particularly in the agricultural town of Sa Pobla.
