At the Conference of Presidents in Formentera on Thursday, the Balearic Government and island councils agreed to study ways of prioritising residents' use of public transport.

President Marga Prohens said "legally viable solutions" will be examined for services that are currently experiencing problems. One idea being considered is the creation of bus services exclusively for residents.

Prohens acknowledged that certain routes are under particular strain during the peak season and that there is "inconvenience" for residents as a result. The greatest problems are with some TIB services in Mallorca.

A few months ago, Prohens' Partido Popular voted against a motion raised by the opposition Més for the busiest services to operate buses for travel card holders only. A reservation system during peak hours was also raised as a possibility.

Prohens explained that a system such as this was legally complicated because of anything that could smack of discrimination based on passenger origin. Nevertheless, she added that she was in favour of some means of giving residents priority.
