An apartment building in Palma was was evacuated on Monday afternoon after the ceiling collapsed on the eighth floor.
The incident occurred around 4pm at a building on C. Sant Novici in the Foners district of the city. The ceiling - the roof in fact - collapsed and fell into the dining room of the top-floor apartment.
After he had left the building, the apartment's owner, Miguel Domingo, said "Thank goodness we hadn't been eating". "I was sitting on the sofa with my eldest daughter, who was visiting, when we heard a very loud shout." They started running. "The debris fell behind me; we were saved by mere seconds."
He explained that two or three months ago, some technicians came and were shown some cracks. "We were waiting for them to come back and tell us something."
"I have nowhere to go. I hope they find me a decent place until I can find something or relocate. My wife and I have nothing." Palma Town Hall later announced that ten of the affected people had been rehoused by social services.
