A 56-year-old German tourist died on Friday afternoon after going to the aid of another man, aged 20, who was drowning.

The incident occurred around 3pm at the beach in Cala Mendia (Manacor) where there were no lifeguards. The younger man was in difficulty; he was being dragged out by the currents. He was in fact rescued thanks to a lifeguard who had rushed to the scene from a hotel.

The older man himself got into difficulty before being pulled to the beach by some people who were paddle surfing.

Officers from the National Police were the first responders. They started attempts at resuscitation that were continued by paramedics. The man was in cardiac arrest. After 30 minutes of attempting to save him, he was announced dead.

The 20-year-old was taken to the Hospital de Llevant in Porto Cristo.
