Mallorca continues to be on pre-alert for drought, the government's director-general for water resources, Joan Calafat, pointing out that the situation is slightly better than a year ago.

"There are no plans to implement water restrictions for the summer. From a technical standpoint, water resources are guaranteed. However, in the current pre-alert situation town halls can adopt certain usage limitations if they deem these appropriate. But these are in no way generalised restrictions and are decisions which come under municipal jurisdiction."

In the case of the two giants reservoirs that supply Palma, the situation is considerably better than a year ago. On April 20, the combined reserve was 72.3%; a year before it was 57.5%. Gorg Blau is at 76.3% and Cúber at 65.9%.

Councillor Llorenç Bauzá, president of Palma's Emaya municipal services agency, which operates the reservoirs, says: "The data on reserves are certainly cause for satisfaction, given that they are significantly better than the levels recorded around this time a year ago. Heavy rainfall of recent months has undoubtedly contributed to this improvement, but it is also related to the prudent and highly responsible approach of Palma residents in conserving water.

"We are now on the cusp of summer, a season generally marked by a lack of rain and by substantial increase in demand due to the peak tourist season. We must not become complacent and must therefore continue to insist that moderation in the use of water resources remains the prevailing principle."
