On Wednesday, there was a breakthrough in pay negotiations between unions and the petrol stations' employers association.

There was agreement on a 3.4% increase to be applied retroactively to 2025 and for an initial two per cent increase in 2026.

The unions had called a four-hour stoppage on April 30 and a 24-hour strike on May 3. These will now not go ahead.

Miquel Amengual of the CCOO union in the Balearics said the agreement was positive, but added it will depend on the rise in inflation, which could erode any benefit from the pay increase.

His counterpart at the UGT, Roberto Serrano, believed it was "insufficient", given the islands' high cost of living. "People who work at service stations in the islands will continue to be precarious workers." However, he accepted that wages will improve. Before the agreement, the situation for service station attendants was "unsustainable", with an average salary of €1,350 - "barely more than the minimum wage".
