Beachgoers at Illetes beach in Mallorca were treated to an unexpected spectacle on Monday after a small pod of dolphins appeared close to shore.
Swimmers and onlookers watched as the marine mammals repeatedly surfaced just metres from the shoreline, briefly showing their dorsal fins before diving back into deeper waters. The sighting lasted several minutes, with many people capturing the moment on their phones.
Encounters with dolphins around the Balearic Islands are not unusual, but they continue to draw excitement from both tourists and locals. The summer months are typically the best time to spot them, thanks to calmer seas and increased marine activity.
On occasion, the dolphins’ fins have been mistaken for sharks by beachgoers observing from a distance, prompting brief concern. However, any confusion is usually quickly resolved once the animals’ behaviour becomes clear.
