At the end of March, there were 26,518 unemployed in the Balearics, eight per cent lower than in March 2025 and 2,338 fewer than in February.

In March, 32,806 new contracts were signed, 10,252 more than a year ago and likely to have been due to the earlier Easter. Of these contracts, 23,821 were permanent and 8,984 were temporary. The majority of contracts - 27,404 - were for the services sector.

As ever, tourism was the principal driver of employment, although there was a notable increase in jobs in the construction industry - up 3,848. The figures from social security indicate that, of the 26,518 people unemployed, 5,782 were foreign nationals.

With 540,388 people registered for work with social security, the unemployment rate was just under five per cent. This is the rate which the Balearic Government, in accordance with generally accepted economic principles, typically takes to equate to technical full employment. For a variety of reasons, there never is 100% full employment.
