Calvia Town Council has announced plans to demolish 11 outdated commercial premises in Magalluf as part of a wider effort to regenerate the area and improve public space. The buildings, located along calle San Miguel de Liria, will be cleared to make way for a new municipal car park with more than 120 spaces for cars and additional provision for electric bicycles.

The project will be funded by a grant of just over €6m from the Balearic Government, sourced through the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS). The scheme forms part of a broader initiative to acquire and redevelop properties in heavily built-up tourist zones, with the aim of reducing density and restoring more natural surroundings.

Officials say the site, in the Torrenova area at the heart of Magalluf, has been disused for several years and has fallen into a state of disrepair. Once home to hospitality and leisure businesses, the buildings are now considered obsolete and unsuitable for modern use.

The redevelopment will be carried out in three stages: acquisition of the property, demolition and site clean-up, and the creation of a new public space designed with sustainability in mind. Plans include the installation of a photovoltaic canopy to generate renewable energy, as well as shaded areas and native planting to help address the impacts of climate change.

Local authorities say the new parking facilities will ease traffic flow and improve access to nearby beaches, particularly via the steps leading down from Torrenova. The mayor described the project as part of a wider push to tackle overcrowding and promote more sustainable forms of mobility, marking the third such demolition undertaken by the current administration in this term.
