The Council of Mallorca has asked the Balearic Islands Port Authority to install five cameras in the ports of Palma and Alcudia to obtain accurate data on the number of cars arriving on the island. These devices are a key component of the future vehicle regulation law being prepared by the institution, the council reported today, Friday.

The initiative will provide, for the first time, exact figures on the total number of passenger cars entering and leaving Mallorca on a monthly and annual basis. The devices, which feature number plate recognition technology, will be able to specifically identify how many hire cars and vehicles with foreign number plates arrive by sea.

This measure forms part of a wider video surveillance project that has just been awarded to the company Imesapi for a sum exceeding €700,000. In total, 210 cameras and 20 noise meters will be deployed across the island. The information gathered will be shared with the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT), the body that has approved the devices and retains the authority to issue fines.

The implementation schedule envisages that preparatory work will begin between April and May, with the installation of the first devices starting in June. The initial priority will be the Serra de Tramuntana, where 64 cameras and the 20 noise meters will be installed to monitor noise and speed at problem spots.

Once the necessary port authorisations have been obtained, installation will proceed at the quays in Palma and Alcudia. With this contract, Mallorca will double its road monitoring points, increasing from the current 53 to 105 monitored zones.

The new technology not only counts vehicles but is also capable of distinguishing between categories, including bicycles, and reading number plates in real time. The institution’s ultimate aim is for the entire network to be operational by October 2026 to combat congestion and improve road safety.
