The mother and uncle of the new-born baby girl thrown into a rubbish container in Porto Cristo in November 2023 have been sentenced to life imprisonment with review. Last Sunday they were found guilty of the baby's murder.

The judge presiding over the trial by jury at the Provincial Court in Palma said "Yolanda (Moreno) and Gustavo (Petrel) intended to get rid of the baby and carried out every act within their power to achieve their goal".

The defendants' behaviour was "vile, perverse, cowardly, and treacherous". The act of taking the life of the premature new-born, who was born alive, and abandoning her in a container "is especially vile". The action demonstrates that the woman and her brother-in-law made decisions "regarding the baby's survival, denying her the care she needed and taking advantage of the power they held as adults over a defenceless new-born". The behaviour of the mother was "particularly despicable; the new-born's mother, the person obliged to care for, feed, and protect her child abandons her and causes her death".

The mother's sister, Rosario Moreno, has been fined €5,400 for failure to provide assistance.

Yolanda Moreno was summoned to be in court to hear the jury's verdict of guilty on Sunday. She didn't appear and is currently missing. A warrant for her arrest has been issued. Local police forces, Guardia Civil and National Police are all searching for her. On Wednesday, various patrols were on the coast in Manacor in the hunt for her.
