La Rambla in Palma has been the latest site of tourism-related vandalism, with residents expressing dismay after graffiti reading “Tourists not welcome” appeared on the trunk of a prominent tree. The tree, located near the busy junction with Calle Olmos—a key route connecting to La Misericordia—was targeted in an act that has drawn widespread attention.

Authorities say this incident is part of a growing trend of similar messages appearing across Palma’s historic centre. The graffiti, visible to both visitors and locals, not only damages urban furniture but also mars the appearance of one of the city’s most frequented areas. Traders and community members have voiced frustration, highlighting concerns over the maintenance and respect of public property.

Vandalism targeting living trees presents a particular challenge. Removing paint from a living specimen is far more complicated than cleaning walls or street furniture, and attempts to do so can risk harming the tree itself. Environmental and urban aesthetics are therefore directly affected, amplifying the impact of such acts beyond mere visual blight.

Observers note that these anti-tourist messages often appear at key times, such as ahead of peak travel seasons or during major events like Easter week. This timing reflects an underlying tension in Palma, where debates about tourism’s influence on local life and the preservation of urban identity have become increasingly visible.

Images of the graffiti at the Calle Olmos intersection have reignited discussions about how to balance tourism with the daily experiences of residents. Local authorities and community leaders have reiterated the importance of protecting public spaces, while encouraging dialogue between visitors and locals to foster coexistence in Palma’s historic areas.
