The body of James 'Jimmy' Gracey, a 20-year-old American student from the University of Alabama, was found on Thursday afternoon in the Port Olímpic area of Barcelona. Gracey had been reported missing since 17 March after leaving the Shoko nightclub in the city.
The student, originally from Illinois, was in Barcelona on spring break, visiting friends studying abroad. His mother, Therese Marren Gracey, confirmed on Facebook that authorities had located his mobile phone, but he never returned to his rented apartment.
The family described Jimmy as "a kind, responsible and devoted son and brother," adding that it was "completely unusual" for him not to be in contact with his family and friends. "We are working closely with local authorities and are incredibly grateful for the support we have received," they stated in a public message.
Authorities also found his wallet floating in the sea nearby, focusing the search efforts in that area prior to the discovery of the body.
During the search, Jimmy’s fraternity, Theta Chi International, expressed its deep concern for his safety and wellbeing. They highlighted his role as a philanthropic leader within the group, stating that he "demonstrates true commitment to his faith, brothers and community."
