A serious accident brought traffic to a standstill yesterday in Palma when a van failed to stop at a railway crossing and collided with the Soller train. Initial reports suggest the driver did not notice the warning signals, leading to the dramatic collision.

Authorities have confirmed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol, recording a positive result of 0.50 mg/l in the relevant breath test. He is expected to face an administrative penalty as a result.

The collision occurred at around 7pm, when the white van failed to spot the approaching train. The front of the vehicle struck the side of the train and was dragged several metres until it hit the low walls separating the exits of a nearby sports centre roundabout.

Local residents were quick to witness the accident, with some reproaching the driver’s behaviour. In the chaos, he also knocked down traffic lights in the area. Witnesses say the man claimed he had not seen the train approaching.

A Traffic Accident Investigation Unit (UVAC) was dispatched to compile the official report, and ambulance services were on standby. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, despite the significant damage caused. The incident also caused widespread traffic congestion in the neighbourhood, a key junction connecting several roads, access to the ring road, and a busy roundabout frequently used during peak evening hours.
