The giant British cruise ship, Sun Princess, will sail into Palma tomorrow morning as the high season for cruise ships on Mallorca officially gets underway. She has a capacity for 4,300 people and a crew of 1,600.
Sun Princess is a Sphere-class cruise ship operated by Princess Cruises, a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation & plc, and is the third ship to sail for the cruise line under this name. Sun Princess was ordered on 23 July 2018 from Fincantieri and constructed at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy. She had her maiden voyage in 2024. She is the largest ship in Princess' current fleet.
The arrival of the Sun Princess, which is registered in Bermuda, marks the start of the cruise ship season in Palma and over the coming months some of the biggest cruise ships in the world will be visiting the port of Palma.
There are still mixed views over the cruise ship industry in Palma. The Balearic government introduced legislation to limit the number of giant cruise ships visiting the port which received a mixed response.
The business community want more cruise ships while some residents are opposed because of alleged overcrowding in the city. The vessel will arrive at 8a.m. and sail at 6p.m.
