The Calvia Local Police organised a major operation over the weekend against pirate taxis in the municipality. The operation led to the detention of two drivers, both Asian, who were driving top of the range vehicles without a licence.

The registration documents for both vehicles have been seized, and both have been impounded at the municipal depot. The drivers face a fine of up to 15,000 euros for driving without the necessary paperwprk.

A Calvia council spokesperson said: "this marks another step forward in the fight against illegal taxis, thanks to an excellent operation by our Local Police."

It is believed that the police had the two vehicles under surveillance for some time. They believe that the two drivers were taking wealthy Asian clients to different parts of the island.

A full police investigation is still underway at the moment and both drivers were questioned by Calvia officers.
