A German cyclist was seriously injured on Friday in Santa Margalida when he was struck by the driver of a private coach who tested positive for cocaine. The accident occurred on the Ma-3413 road connecting Santa Margalida and Can Picafort. Emergency services quickly responded and the victim was taken to Palma's Son Espases hospital for treatment.
According to the Police Local sources, the collision happened at around 6pm. The cyclist suffered significant injuries including wounds to his legs and hands. Medical staff assessed the possibility of rib fractures and potential lung damage, prompting his transfer to the University Hospital of Son Espases for further care.
After conducting alcohol and drug tests, the coach driver, a Spanish national, returned a positive result for cocaine. The coach, owned by a private company, was immobilised on-site and later removed by a tow truck. Representatives from the bus operator were notified and attended the scene to manage the situation.
Investigators are considering that the driver might have been temporarily blinded by sunlight when the incident occurred, which could explain the accident. Officials confirmed that the cyclist’s life is not in danger.
The injured man is a tourist who recently arrived in Mallorca for cycle tourism and is currently staying at a residence in Santa Margalida.
