Palma pedestrian street becomes ‘skating rink’ during rain

Before the street was pedestrianised, a Palma court in 2024 ordered the local council (Cort) to pay €17,000 to a woman who slipped on raised tiles caused by tree root damage near the Avingudes in 2018

Nuredduna Street in Palma, along with the nearby Plaza de las Columnas, has been described by locals as turning into “a skating rink” during rain. This is due to the number of accidents and slips reported on the wet pavement, which residents say remains hazardous even when the street is hosed down for cleaning, according to a regular of a local bar in the pedestrianised area providing access to the Avingudes and Porta de Sant Antoni.

Recently, the local group Flipau amb Pere Garau highlighted the dangers of the pavement on Nuredduna Street with images showing an accident there. They point out that, depending on the type of shoe sole or material, the surface becomes particularly slippery, leading to falls that may result in injury.

The issue is not confined to Nuredduna. Similar complaints about slippery pavements during wet conditions have been recorded on other streets in central Palma. A social media post shared by Flipau amb Pere Garau clearly demonstrates how water accumulation creates a hazardous layer across the street, a situation confirmed by numerous eyewitnesses and residents’ accounts.

A previously documented case underlines the longstanding nature of the problem. Prior to the street’s pedestrianisation, in 2024 a court in Palma ruled against the local council (Cort) over damages sustained in 2018 by a woman who slipped on raised tiles caused by tree root damage near the Avingudes. The court awarded her compensation of €17,000.

These ongoing hazards have prompted questions about the suitability of current paving materials and designs for the footwear commonly worn in wet conditions, signalling a need for reconsideration to improve pedestrian safety in the area.
