In the latest Forbes list of the world's 1,000 richest people, there is space for just one Mallorcan - Miquel Fluxà, the president of the Iberostar Group.

He retains his membership of this club despite having dropped 55 places. He has in fact nearly dropped out, having gone down to 984th, even though his personal fortune, according to the US business magazine, having risen by $400 million. This fortune is put at $4.3 billion (€3.72 billion).

Outside the 1,000 list are three other Mallorcan hoteliers. Luis Riu and Carmen Riu Güell of Riu Hotels & Resorts are 2,274th, both with $1.8 billion (€1.55 billion). Simón Pedro Barceló, head of the Barceló Group, is 2,712th with $1.4 billion (€1.21 billion). Two bankers sit above these hoteliers - Carlos March Delgado and Juan March Delgado of Banca March, which is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding by Joan March Ordines in 1926. (He was sometimes referred to as 'Franco's banker'.) They occupy 1,834th and 1,913th places respectively.

Miquel Fluxà is the ninth richest Spaniard, the wealthiest once more being Amancio Ortega, the founder of the Inditex Group, whose retail brands include Zara. The tenth richest person in the world, Forbes calculates his fortune to be $148 billion (€127.95 billion).

Number one in the world is Elon Musk - $839 billion (€725 billion). Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Amazon's Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg of Meta trail him.
