Two U.S. Navy helicopters landed at Palma airport this morning as military activity in Mallorca airspace continues to intensify. The two multi-role Seahawk helicopters arrived in Palma from southern France, according to an aircraft tracking website.
On Thursday two U.S. military transport aircraft overflew Mallorca heading or departing for the naval base at Roya on the mainland. Earlier this week two giant C-5 Galaxy aircraft overflew local airspace. The Galaxy is one of the biggest military aircraft in the world. The USAF has been operating the C-5 since 1969. In that time, the airlifter supported US military operations in all major conflicts including Vietnam, Iraq, Yugoslavia, and Afghanistan, as well as allied support, such as Israel during the Yom Kippur War and operations in the Gulf War. The Galaxy has also distributed humanitarian aid, provided disaster relief, and supported the US space program.
The Spanish government has refused to give the United States permission to use their Spanish bases for attacks on Iran but U.S. military aircraft are still very active in local airspace especially transport and support aircraft.
The Sikorsky SH-60/MH-60 Seahawk (or Sea Hawk) is a twin turboshaft engine, multi-mission United States Navy helicopter based on the United States Army UH-60 Black Hawk and a member of the Sikorsky S-70 family. The most significant modifications are the folding main rotor blades and a hinged tail to reduce its footprint aboard ships.
It is unclear how long the U.S. Navy helicopters would be remaining in Palma. The Spanish air force maintains a small air base at Palma airport.
