Calvia is preparing to celebrate a landmark moment in Magalluf’s transformation. On Saturday 27 June, the town will officially open the second phase of the Magaluf Gabriel Escarrer Juliá Seafront Promenade with a major event combining classical music, technology and beachfront dining. The celebration forms part of Calvia’s “Year of Cinema” initiative, linking the town’s urban renewal projects with its growing reputation as a destination for film and audiovisual culture.

The centrepiece of the event will be a concert by the Balearic Islands Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Pablo Mielgo. The orchestra will perform some of the most famous film soundtracks, including Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter and Jurassic Park, alongside themes from 007, Titanic and The Pink Panther. The performance under the banner “Magaluf is Cinema” is designed to reflect the town’s shift towards a higher-quality tourism offer for all ages.

As dusk falls, a display of 300 synchronised drones will illuminate the bay, creating cinematic images and figures in the sky. The technology provides a sustainable alternative to fireworks, underlining the town’s commitment to modernisation and environmental responsibility. Mayor Juan Antonio Amengual described the inauguration as a “symbol of Magaluf’s change of model,” highlighting the town’s ambition to become a cultural hub and a recognised destination for the film industry.

The weekend will also host the second edition of the Magalluf Gastrofira, celebrating local gastronomy. Visitors will be able to sample the best dishes from local restaurants in the newly renovated seafront area. The initiative forms part of a wider sustainable tourism campaign, supported by the Balearic Government and funded via the Sustainable Tourism Tax, encouraging responsible tourism and coexistence between visitors and residents.

The redevelopment of the promenade, completed with the support of Next Generation EU funds and the Sustainable Tourism Tax, represents a total investment of €6.2 million. Other improvements are planned for the area, including road resurfacing and drainage upgrades on Punta Ballena and adjacent streets, continuing the broader “Calvià Millora” programme to modernise the town’s infrastructure.
