At the ITB Berlin tourism fair on Tuesday, President Prohens expressed her concern about the potential economic and tourism repercussions of the conflict in the Middle East. She said "we must act prudently and analyse what happens in the coming hours and days", accepting that there may be adjustments to tourism because of insecurity. She added that the Balearic Government will be meetings tour operators in Berlin in order to "take the pulse" of possible changes in demand in other destinations.

Prohens observed that the current situation could strengthen the Balearic Islands' position as a safe destination in the western Mediterranean. "We are a safe destination, and that is a key factor in times of international instability."

She noted that matters can shift radically in just 48 hours, which demonstrates the tourism industry's sensitivity to international crisis. "That's why it's essential to have a solid strategy and be present on the front lines to explain our model and our roadmap."

The Balearic tourism minister, Jaume Bauzà, acknowledged that the conflict "will certainly have an impact on the Balearics", because of the uncertainty and the first signs of strains in the energy and transport markets. He pointed out that there are already some price increases, which could have indirect effects on the islands' tourism economy.

"We are keeping a close eye on how the situation unfolds", stressing that any impact will depend on the scope and duration of the conflict. He wished to focus, first and foremost, on the human dimension of the crisis. "Our primary concern is for those directly affected by this situation."
