Around 5pm on Tuesday a fire broke out in the top-floor apartment of the Minaco building opposite the El Corte Inglés department store on the Avenidas in Palma.
Several crews from Palma Fire Department were dispatched from nearby stations. The fire caused extensive material damage on the seventh floor; fortunately, the residents of the affected apartment had already evacuated. There was one child in the apartment.
Some residents were treated for smoke inhalation, but their injuries were minor. One of the residents of the affected apartment suffered burns to the face and one hand, although these burns were from a previous fire around 3pm.
A neighbour explains that it was "very strange". White smoke had been seen around 3pm and then a fire broke out at 5pm.
The fire department says the initial incident was dealt with quickly. But a bag which was put out on the balcony had a small ember inside it, and a gust of wind reignited the fire.
The fire was soon extinguished.
