Palma town hall begins expropriation of shops in Plaza Mayor to kickstart redevelopment

The redevelopment project aims to improve pedestrian access and modernise the facilities

Palma town hall has formally launched the expropriation process for the 25 privately owned shops and shared spaces within the underground galleries of Plaza Mayor. The local government is offering a total of 4,224,538 euros for the properties, covering approximately 1,975 square metres located on level -1 of the plaza.

The decision was approved by the Government on Wednesday, marking the initial step before construction work can begin on the planned transformation of this central area in Palma. The final design for the redevelopment is currently being drafted.

The council's deputy spokesperson, Llorenç Bauzà, outlined that the expropriation procedures will follow a joint appraisal system, with a public information period of one month to allow stakeholders to submit any objections or comments. This stage is essential for moving forward with the revitalisation project.

Architectural project and urban impact

The winning proposal for the Plaza Mayor project comes from the team of Barceló Balantzó Arquitectes and Scop Arquitectura i Paisatge. According to Bauzà, the selection was based on a design that "combines architectural quality, heritage respect and enhancement of public use, contributing to the social and territorial cohesion of Palma."

This redevelopment aims to improve pedestrian access, modernise the facilities, and ensure the space better serves the community, aligning with broader urban integration goals in the Balearics capital.
